LEIPZIG-AUFBAUWERK

Aufbauwerk Region Leipzig GmbH

Presentation of your region and organisation:

With more than four million inhabitants, Saxony is the seventh largest federal state in Germany in terms of population and the tenth largest in terms of area. The state capital is Dresden, the most populous city, however, is Leipzig as the centre of the transnational metropolitan region of Central Germany. Alongside these two, the third largest city in the state and at the same time the fourth largest city in Eastern Germany is Chemnitz.

Reunification in 1990 led to significant changes in immigration in Saxony. Whereas during the GDR immigration was only small-scale and predominantly temporary due to the recruitment of contract workers, it increased significantly in the years following the peaceful revolution of 1989. As of today, migrants in Saxony come mainly from Syria, Poland, Russia, Afghanistan and Romania – almost every third foreigner in Saxony comes from an EU country.

Aufbauwerk is a joint municipal company of the City of Leipzig and the surrounding districts of Leipzig, Central Saxony and Northern Saxony with a long track record in managing regional and European projects. Our work focuses on strengthening urban and regional development through national and European funding programmes.

As a civil society organisation, Aufbauwerk Region Leipzig GmbH works on projects that go far beyond the obligatory and voluntary tasks of the districts and the city of Leipzig, while serving the general interest of society such as integration of migrants to the labour market.

  • Presentation of your ongoing work on integration:

Since 2012, the Free State of Saxony has implemented and updated an Immigration and Integration Concept (ZIK), which contains Saxony’s goals and measures in 12 fields of action to support the integration of people with a migrant background into our society. The aim of this concept is to continue making Saxony a good home for all people who live here.

Also, the municipality of Leipzig, being Saxony’s city with the with the highest percentage of foreigners, developed their own integration strategy in 2012. Many of the actions are realised as funded projects of which some were or are coordinated by Aufbauwerk, like RESQUE 2.0 (finished in September 2022) and Regionales Integrationsnetzwerk IQ Leipzig, to strengthen the integration of migrants to the labour market.

  • Your role and expectations for the EU-BELONG project:

Our goal is to sharpen the integration strategies in Saxony and to learn from the other project partners to make the region an even better place for all people.
