LEIPZIG-AUFBAUWERK
About the region
Saxony, Germany’s seventh most populous state with over four million residents, is known for its major cities Dresden, Leipzig, and Chemnitz. Since German reunification in 1990, immigration has increased significantly, with many migrants from Syria, Poland, Russia, Afghanistan, and Romania; nearly a third of foreign nationals are from EU countries.
Aufbauwerk, a joint municipal company with Leipzig and neighbouring districts, manages regional and European projects aimed at enhancing urban and regional development through national and European funding.
Our intercultural integration approach
“Vielfalt Leben”(“Living Diversity”) was established to foster intercultural integration in Leipzig, recognising the city’s diverse population and aiming to address the specific needs of migrants. The strategy’s key priorities address all essential facets of life, ensuring holistic support for migrants and facilitating their integration into Leipzig’s society.
The highest coordinating body is the Koordinierungsgremium (KOG), established in October 2018. It includes various committees, working groups, and networks in the field of migration and integration. The KOG is managed by the directors of the Leipzig Employment Agency, Leipzig Jobcentre, and the Lord Mayor of Leipzig, with the city’s Department for Migration and Integration running the office.
More information about the strategy can be found in the document “Building Inclusive Societies: Regional Strategies for Intercultural Integration”, while the original version in the local language is accessible at “Get the Tool” page of the EU-Belong website.
Looking ahead
Leipzig decided to continue the implementation of the established strategy with the pilot project “Heroes – Against Oppression in the Name of Honour”. A detailed evaluation will be performed before the end of the project.
