Donegal

About the region

County Donegal, located in Ulster, had a population of 167,084 as of the 2022 census, with 7% of people living here were born outside Ireland, reflecting the county’s growing diversity and the need for fostering intercultural understanding.

The Social Inclusion Unit of Donegal County Council works to raise awareness about social inclusion and poverty, highlighting their impact on residents’ lives. This is achieved through the Council’s involvement in multi-agency structures and collaborative projects aimed at delivering more inclusive services.

Our intercultural integration approach

The Black and Minority Ethnic Inclusion: A Strategy for County Donegal 2021 – 2026 was launched on 25 March 2022, marking an important milestone in the history of Donegal. This Strategy seeks an inclusion based on equality and human rights and reflects values shared across all stakeholders.

Comprising 47 actions to foster an intercultural county, the strategy builds previous initiatives and leadership from BME communities. It aligns with national policies such as the Migrant Integration Strategy and the National Traveller and Roma Inclusion Strategy, emphasising equal-ity, human rights, and the elimination of racism.

More information about the strategy can be found in the document “Building Inclusive Societies: Regional Strategies for Intercultural Integration”, while the original version in the local language is accessible at “Get the Tool” page of the EU-Belong website.

Looking ahead

Donegal decided to start the implementation of the established strategy with the pilot projects “Donegal CARA: Communities Against Racism Action” and “Supporting Pathways”. A detailed evaluation will be performed before the end of the project.
